Open for Business - GCN Magazine - June 2005

Government Computer News has documented how commercial open source licensing of government projects is leveraging the public's investment in software. In the June 6 issue GCN notes that releasing government software projects via a public open source license, rather than the more passive public domain default, does promote innovation, re-use and ultimately savings. "Devis has been promoting our philosophy of public infostructure for many years," said Devis President Peter Gallagher. "The GCN story will help acquisition officials see that open source licensing has dynamic potential to transform eGovernment and, like any significant IT project, does require commercial support from vendors - OSS-savvy vendors. Devis intends to continue to contribute to and support OSS in government where it is appropriate including the EZRO/Workforce Connections (TM) elearning/content management system."

Infostructure is defined as the people, processes and IT systems that enable information exchange. Public infostructure recognizes a special obligation that public sector IT investments can be used to produce public technology that can then be shared to improve eGovernment activities globally.
