Jordan's businesses, government and academic communities gathered on July 26-27 in Amman, Jordan to hear from leading figures and regional experts at the second Jordan Open Source Software (OSS) Conference. Development InfoStructure (Devis) and the Information Technology Association – Jordan (int@j) organized this interactive event. As a leading firm in the Open Source community, Devis was instrumental in setting the conference agenda as well as identifying, recruiting, and coordinating the international Open Source speakers that presented at the conference. The conference was held under the patronage of her Excellency Ms. Nadia Al-Saeed, Minister of Information and Communications Technology (ICT). The event was sponsored by IBM and funded by the USAID-funded AMIR Program.
This was the second Open Source Software Conference that Devis has been involved in organizing for Jordan. The first conference was held in Amman in 2002 and was effective in introducing Open Source concepts into a broader segment of Jordan's IT industry. For the second conference Devis wanted to build on the introductory knowledge by bringing practical real-life opportunities to attendees. Thus, the second conference was devoted to (1) practical applications of Open Source to various sectors including business, finance, the public sector and education (2) OS business models and ways of making money doing OS development, and (3) ways of lowering costs and increasing the export of IT products and services by adopting OS. Devis recruited a panel of local, regional and international speakers to inform on best-practices and promote communication channels amongst attendees.
