Government Award Honors the Site's Outstanding 'Citizen-focused Online Services'
Arlington, Virginia (September 26, 2005) – Development InfoStructure (Devis), a leading provider of information technology consulting services, announced that the first-ever Web Content Managers Best Practice Peer Award was presented to DisabilityInfo.gov, the Devis-developed federal Web site that serves people with disabilities and other community members. Given by the Web Content Managers Forum – a peer group comprised of more than 900 federal, state and local government Web managers – the award honors DisabilityInfo.gov's outstanding "citizen-focused online services."
"DisabilityInfo.gov represents the best kind of collaborative government-to-citizen service, and is a powerful example of the new, networked government," said Peter Gallagher, president and co-founder of Devis. "It's been Devis's honor to be a part of this valuable federal initiative, and we're thrilled to see the site receive such a well-deserved distinction from peers in the public sector."
A collaborative effort among 16 federal departments and agencies, DisabilityInfo.gov provides one-stop access to information and resources on a wide range of disability-related topics. Since 2002, this unique site has received more than 4.4 million visitors from 180 countries, averaging more than 3,000 users per month. The Web site is a part of President Bush's New Freedom Initiative, which calls for a citizen-centric entry point to federal, state and local programs for people with disabilities.
The U.S. Department of Labor's Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP), which manages DisabilityInfo.gov, hired Devis to design and develop the Web site in 2002. Because disability subject matter experts from 16 federal agencies are tasked with maintaining the site, Devis designed a Content Manager module so these experts could make new information immediately available to the public. The Content Manager interface enables dispersed federal contributors to easily publish online information without requiring any HTML or other specialized Web skills. ODEP subcontractor, Concepts, Inc., has complemented Devis' DisabilityInfo.gov efforts by coordinating federal agency participation in the project and promoting the Web site's value to the public.
ODEP accepted the Web Content Managers Best Practice Peer Award on the program's behalf on September 22 (See Department of Labor Press Release). Earlier this year DisabilityInfo.gov was also awarded Disability Network's 2005 Outstanding Web site Award. Disability Network is an information resource for people with disabilities and their families.
