Digital Talking Books

  go

Devis' Digital Talking Books (DTB) system combines web technologies with the power of audio, allowing you to deliver your content to any audience in text or audio format.

Digital Talking Books systems based on DAISY standards have been in use for several years in Japan, Scandinavia, the U.K. and the U.S., giving people with visual impairments access to textbook and leisure reading material. Traditionally, hardware devices and software programs have been used to play DTB. Now Devis has demonstrated that DTB content can also be delivered over the telephone and the Internet using VOIP (Voice Over IP).

Devis' DTB technology can create a new, flexible, easy-to-maintain distribution channel for your content. In addition to general reading material, DTB can also be used to deliver web site content, providing an additional option for your organization's need to meet Section 508 compliance.

Devis' DTB telephone and VOIP model is ready for deployment and can be scaled as needed to meet your organization's needs, and Devis can provide development and hosting services for DTB customized to your unique application.

Built using open-source technologies, Devis' DTB system delivers your content through an easy-to-navigate interface. The Digital Talking Book complies with the accessibility requirements of Section 508, and has proven attractive to mainstream publishers.

DTB uses XML-based technologies to provide features not available on conventional Interactive Voice Response (IVR) systems. Using a traditional touch-tone telephone keypad as a book navigation medium, users can:

  • Navigate through any amount of audio content at their own pace
  • Listen to an overview, or to just the content the user needs
  • Review important content as frequently as they wish

This technology is currently defined in an ANSI standard and is supported by the Library of Congress' National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped. In addition, it is supported through the international DAISY Consortium (www.daisy.org).
