Devis Paper on Responsive Design Accepted by CSUN

Arlington, VA (November, 2012) Devis’ paper on Responsive Design was recently accepted by California State University, Northridge (CSUN) and will be presented by lead developers, Ben Wetzel and Justin Stockton, at CSUN’s 28th Annual International Technology and Persons with Disabilities Conference. This submission was inspired by Devis’s award-winning application, “Access Jobs”, which was created for a challenge issued by the Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP). ODEP’s Disability Employment App Challenge asked developers to build a website or application that helps promote and further the cause of hiring people with disabilities. Devis’ submission, Access Jobs, embodied every aspect of that challenge and rose to the occasion by winning the grand prize – the Innovation Award.

Devis’ big picture approach to accessibility with an emphasis on usability, made it clear to the team that an application should not only produce a comparable experience for persons with disabilities but also improve the experience for all users. Many applications and websites cater only to desktop users, even though users with mobile devices are becoming increasingly common. With the end goal of a comparable experience for persons with disabilities, indifferent of the device used, the Devis team focused on creating a website using responsive design. This revolutionary approach to web design enables the same content to be accessible and usable on any device, while catering the user experience to be optimal for each. The Devis team’s CSUN submission details the process Devis used to create the Access Jobs application covering the tools and techniques they used as well as the challenges they faced.
