Arlington, VA (March, 2013) Devis’ expertise in accessibility was showcased this year at the California State University, Northridge (CSUN) Annual International Technology and Persons with Disabilities Conference. Devis staff members were honored to give two presentations at the conference -- one on the Devis developed and hosted web application, ePolicyWorks and the other on Responsive Design as implemented for the award-winning application Access Jobs.
At the CSUN Conference, Lee Crank (Devis Project Manager) joined Michael Reardon (DOL's Office of Disability Employment Policy) and Katia Albanese (Concepts, Inc.) to give a presentation on "ePolicyWorks: Addressing Accessibility in a SharePoint Workspace." This presentation included details on how the Devis team reconfigured functionality within SharePoint 2010 to be more accessible and usable for people with assistive technologies. Some examples of these enhancements included revising table formats, adding descriptive labels, removing disabled ribbon features, and improving the site navigation and help features. Most importantly, the ePolicyWorks team recognizes the limitations of tools like SharePoint and identifies known issues and potential workarounds in the system's Accessibility Statement.
Devis takes a big picture approach to accessibility with an emphasis on usability. This means, we are able to produce a comparable experience for persons with disabilities while also improving the experience for all users, including those using mobile devices. When developing the Access Jobs application, Devis focused on creating a website using responsive design. Responsive design is an innovative approach to web design that enables the same content to be accessible and usable on any device, while catering the user experience to be optimal for each. At the CSUN Conference, lead software developers, Ben Wetzel and Justin Stockton, detailed the process Devis used to develop Access Jobs. The Accessibility Through Responsive Design presentation focuses on the tools and techniques they used as well as the challenges they faced.
